STRATEGY CORNER
Let's talk about what separates the crushers from the fish in small stakes tournaments: knowing when to c-bet and when to check.
Most players fall into two camps - the "bet everything" crowd who fire with air on every flop, and the "scared money" players who check back pocket aces because they're afraid of getting raised. Both are bleeding chips.
The secret? In my book I mention that, It's not about your cards. It's about hand classes and range advantage.
Think of your hands in four simple categories:
Class A: Value hands (top pair+, sets, strong made hands)
Class B: Good draws (flush draws, straight draws, strong backdoors)
Class C: Medium strength (weak pairs, decent ace-high)
Class D: Complete trash
Your default strategy should be: bet Class A and Class B, check Class C and Class D.
But here's where most players mess up - they don't adjust for board texture. On a dry A-7-2 rainbow board after you've raised UTG, you have massive range advantage. Fire away with almost everything because your opponent is folding 70% of their range.
On a wet 9-8-7 with two suits? Pump the brakes. Your opponent's calling range is loaded with made hands and draws that aren't folding. When you do bet these textures, size up to 60-75% pot to charge their draws properly.
The game-changer: bet sizing is a function of frequency. The more often you bet, the smaller you should go. The less often you bet, the bigger your sizing.
Stop overthinking it. Master this simple framework and watch your win rate climb while everyone else keeps making the same expensive mistakes.
If you're struggling with when to continuation bet or finding yourself in tough spots postflop because of poor c-betting decisions, this is exactly the kind of fundamental strategy we break down in The Poker Accelerator. These adjustments can transform your postflop profitability immediately.
