Let's talk about ICM pressure and how to use it as a weapon in tournament play. When you're approaching the money bubble or final table, Independent Chip Model calculations become crucial for optimal decision-making. Here's the key insight most players miss: you don't just play tight when ICM pressure is high—you need to identify who else is feeling that pressure and exploit them mercilessly.

In my book, I mention that ICM also dictates when to apply pressure to your opponents by shoving wider and forcing them to fold. If you are a short stack and there are still other short stacks left in the field, you should feel okay passing up certain edges as you wait for them to bust instead. However, this is less true if you are one of the only short stacks left. Your priority then is looking for a spot to double quickly so you can build a stack to contend for the outright win.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t ever bluff or take chances on a final table bubble or at a pay jump. Eventually, if you go deep enough, literally all the pay jumps start becoming significant. But you have to take these kinds of decisions in game.

Remember: ICM isn't just about survival—it's about recognizing when others are in survival mode and capitalizing on their fear.
