Reshoving: The Late-Stage Weapon You're Probably Misusing

Reshoving is one of the most powerful plays in late-stage tournament Poker. It's also one of the most misunderstood. Most players either shove too wide or way too tight.

What is a Reshove?

A reshove is when someone moves all-in after you've already moved all-in. The two main benefits of proper reshove strategy: you get better hands to fold (your opponent might fold their calling range instead of coming over the top), and you realize your full equity if the reshove gets called (you see all five cards instead of just three on the flop).

If you just call an all-in, you might only see a flop before folding to aggression. If you reshove, you get to see the turn and river, realizing your complete equity. This is why reshove ranges tend to be wider than standard calling ranges at the same stack depth.

Reshoving as a Short Stack (10 BBs or Less):

When you're short stacked with 10 big blinds or less, your reshove range should consist primarily of pairs and Broadway combos. Aces and kings give you high card equity—they dominate the original shoving range. Why? Because at these stack depths, you're going to the river. Ace-high or king-high can win at showdown.

Seven-high will probably not be winning at showdown. You want hands that either have strong equity against their range or have decent showdown value. A-8 is tougher to reshove because the original shoving range has so many Ax combos.

Another reason we like reshove with Ax and Kx combos: they block the likelihood that the original shovers has stronger ace and king combos. If you reshove A-J, you're blocking three combos of A-A in the shover's range. The shover can have less strong ace holdings but still have lots of hands to stack off with.

Reshoving as a Deep Stack (20-30 BBs):

When you're between 20 and 30 big blinds, you need to be more selective with your reshove hands. You need to be value heavy. Your strong hands include high pairs and Broadway combos like A-K. When you're facing a 20BB shove, your opponent likely has a pretty strong opening range so be cautious of this.

Reshoving from the Big Blind:

When you're in the big blind, you call more and don't do as much rejamming. This is because you're getting a better price to call thanks to the blind you already invested. For example, a player in middle position shoves for 6BB, the cutoff calls, and you have 9-8 suited with a 25BB stack. You should call this because it's only five more BBs and you don't want to risk your tournament life at this stack depth by reopening the pot.

The Key Concept:

Reshove strategy changes based on stack depths, position, and your opponent's range. Shallow stacks reshove wider with pairs and high cards. Deeper stacks reshove tighter with value hands. The goal: apply pressure while maintaining a range that can win against their reshoving calling range. Most players miss this balance and either reshove too loose or too tight.
