STRATEGY CORNER

Let's talk about one of the most fundamental yet frequently misunderstood concepts in winning Poker: Position Play and Why Your Seat Matters More Than Your Cards.

Here's the truth that separates long-term winners from perpetual losers: position is the single most important factor in determining which hands you should play. Yet most players completely ignore positional advantage and wonder why they can't seem to get ahead.

Think about it this way: when you're on the button, you act last and have the most information on your opponents. You see every opponent's action before making your decision on every postflop street. That information is incredibly important for the rest of the hand. This is why professional players can show profit playing 65-suited from the button but fold A7-offsuit from early position.

The key concept most players miss is this: your hand's value is directly tied to your position. A hand like KJ-suited is a monster on the button against late position opens but becomes a marginal fold from under the gun in a full ring game. Position determines playability more than card strength.

Here's the practical application: before you play any hand, ask yourself "can I profitably play this hand from this position against this opponent?" If you're in early position, you need strong hands that play well multiway. If you're on the button, you can expand dramatically because you'll have position throughout the entire hand.

The biggest leak I see in players moving up stakes is playing too many hands from early position and not enough from late position. They treat their starting hand range as position-independent, which is fundamentally incorrect. Every hand's profitability is position-dependent.

Start thinking about position as the primary factor in your preflop decisions. When you master positional awareness, you'll find yourself making more profitable decisions automatically.

If you're constantly finding yourself in difficult postflop spots or unsure which hands to play from which positions, position awareness is exactly what we drill into students at The Poker Accelerator. This single concept can transform your results overnight.
